Didier and the anchorite
Series: «Les cahiers noirs»
© 1997

It is only a short time that Chief Inspector Agnès Didier has been head of the Criminal Division in Paris. It is not her choice. The actual Commissioner is absent and so she is put in charge of a group of men who, from the very first moment, have difficulty accepting her. From the start all call her Commissioner, maybe more tongue in cheek than out of conviction. But, as it usually happens to smart women, her first case is a total success, having solved the death of Refus the Astrologer, thus earning the admiration of her colleagues. It’s in this work atmosphere that she must solve a series of extremely intricate murder cases. Not only because of the different personalities of the deceased but also because of the mysterious persons who seem to be implicated. Thanks to her determination and that of her colleagues, a bit of luck added, in the end all becomes clear. Risky investigations, totally unexpected events, a surprising finale.

Didier and the little Babette
Series: «Les cahiers noirs»
© 1998

It is possible that the almost Chief Inspector Agnès Didier would have never imagined that, one day, she would be confronted with something which would cause her great pain and suffering. When one is a member of the criminal police corps, one expects to expect the unexpected. This time she was a bit too optimistic, firmly believing that she would overcome any adversity, psychologically and in her soul. Only toward the end of the investigation did Didier realize that something in her has profoundly changed. She is no longer able to maintain her own self-control, her equanimity. Her colleagues and superiors always admired this in her. We will not give you any further clues. We suggest that you attentively read page after page and at the end ask yourself if that which happened to Didier happened to me how would I react.

Didier’s holidays
Series: «Les cahiers noirs»
© 2000

If you still haven’t read about Commissioner Agnès Didier of the Paris crime squad, a beautiful blonde recently appointed head of the murder office, then you will be amazed by her frenetic energy, even far away from Paris. Indeed, somebody ruins even her longed for summer holidays which she would have liked to dedicate purely to Etruscan remains in southern Tuscany. This time, however, she doesn’t have to battle against habitual murderers but instead to challenge an entire town. Unexpected occurrences are the order of the day, as are slander and gossip… the reader will be amused to note that there is not much difference between one’s own surroundings and that of the small town in this novel. A break from the daily routine. Between one murder and another, naturally.

Didier and the Lugano gossips
Series: «Les cahiers noirs»
© 2002

Agnès Didier, Chief Inspector of the Paris crime squad, was sure to spend some relaxing days in Lugano. A normal meeting between European police officers. But as it so often happens to those who delude themselves, she becomes involved in a mysterious local murder, which is so brutal that it had been years since the newspapers registered anything similar. Lugano is small. She and her Swiss colleagues must deal with a situation rendered difficult by the very particular character of the deceased, Signora Katharina Frisch. With the usual woman’s intuition and the help from the group of local gossips, Didier will manage, brilliantly, to solve this strange and horrible murder case. The Chief of Police Belli gave Commissario Lamberti a definite deadline, Sunday 5 October, the final day of the annual Festa della Vendemmia (Grape Harvest Festival), at which time he wants to announce the solution of the case to the Press. There will be an announcement, amidst several unexpected events.

Didier and the Pygmalion lover
Series: «Les cahiers noirs»
© 2003

Can a man change people? Can people who have hidden qualities change to such a point that they improve themselves? In truth, this was what lawyer Paul Swann was attempting to do. But as so often happens, an individual can not always have everything he wants, especially when he takes his so-called “mission” too seriously. One fine day the lawyer is found dead in his bed. Did he die of natural causes or was he murdered? The question is permissible since, in consequence, many other people have vanished into thin air. Have they fled, disappeared or been killed? The Swann case is intricate and once again Commissioner Didier is confronted with complex investigations and hounded by Press and TV. Inspector Mulé will have to accept a newcomer to their team. A psychologist sent by the Prefect because now it seems no longer sufficient to investigate those persons responsible of a crime but one must also obtain the psychological portrait of the victims in order to solve a case. In the end, all’s well and sold but not exactly to Didier’s complete
satisfaction.

Didier and the monster
Series: «Les cahiers noirs»
© 2007

Why does a man commit crimes? And why so sadistic? What causes him to transform into an abnormal being, outside of the laws of human nature? That’s what Didier asks herself after examining the bodies of the two victims. Now the press and all Paris called the murderer “the monster”. The two women were not tortured at the site where found. Why did the monster transport them there? Alexis Dobrovich, the police psychologist, will try to assist Didier. To get in to and comprehend the mind of a human being is a complicated matter. The frantic investigations, complete with unexpected changes, bring forth daily surprises so much so that her team begins to seriously doubt how to unravel it. Having solved the first crimes, a totally unexpected crime upsets all. Mulé will present Didier with a solution – on a silver platter.

Didier and the countess
Series: «Les cahiers noirs»
© 2009

A judge in Turin, Italy, is investigating a case of how the Italian political parties are being financed and issues two international orders of arrest for a countess and her male friend, both living in France. He believes them to be of key importance to the case. In Paris at a reception Commissioner Didier runs into – by chance of so it seems – Inspector Wolf, formerly of Interpol and now with the Ministry of Interior. He recounts a rather unclear story in which important persons of high regard in the French government are mixed up. She understands that “high up” there is serious concern that the international interests of France could be damaged. Not really in agreement with it all, Didier must accept the assignment, without yet knowing which truth is the truth to follow. She’s immediately entangled in political plots and arms smuggling but, with her acumen, in the end she survives.

Didier and Pains Corbier
Series: «Les cahiers noirs»
© 2009

An important man died of a knife wound in his back. A kitchen knife, left in the wound, no fingerprints. There is no doubt: a classic murder case, caused by momentarily rage or hate but also of fear to look the victim in the face at the moment of the deed. A difficult case for Didier, due to the numerous relatives living in or frequenting the man’s home, all benefiting from his generosity but, all the same, detesting him. Each one of them could have had a reason to kill him. To Didier’s mind, only to hate is not reason enough to kill. Maybe however killed him thought of having done a good deed? But why? This is what Didier wants to discover and, as usual, she uncovers the truth.

Didier and the woman drowned
Series: «Les cahiers noirs»
© 2009

The woman was lying on the beach, presumably dead by drowning. Maybe one of those inattentive swimmers. However during the investigation some totally unexpected details surface. And not only those. Strange eastern European trafficking, once upon a time behind the Iron Curtain, help Commissioner Didier understand that this death is far more complicated and complex than as assumed by the investigations done by a respectable provincial gendarme. Obscure persons, actually social parasites, are a part of the story. Fraudsters, speculators, white slave traders, drug dealers and other populate this our world. The secret services, not that secretive, because they work in the open. This is not science fiction. If it were, then it would be ridiculous to write about it. And this, Algard would never do.

Didier in Lugano, the return
Series: «Les cahiers noirs»
© 2010

A case in Paris by the multiple killer Maurice Gallien is clearly connected to arms dealings and the sale of technology in the Orient, making use of financing through Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. After investigations and international court inquiries, it becomes clear that the mastermind is in Switzerland. Taking advantage of Gallien’s arrest in Ticino, Commissioner Didier returns to Lugano to extradite him to France. It is also a chance to quietly check out the death of an important banker in Geneva, a death which occurred shortly after her arrival in Switzerland. A crime of passion, so claim the investigators and the Press. Together with Commissario Lamberti, an old friend, Didier finds out more than she should know. Often when one comes too close to real power, definite clues vanish into thin air. In order not to endanger the life of her friend Lamberti, Didier keeps quiet about a lot of information gained.

Didier and the penned testament

The governess finds her beautiful mistress dead in the bedroom of the luxurious apartment located in one of the best Parisian residential areas. No obvious sign of physical violence. In a desk drawer in the library, Didier spots some sheets held together by a clasp in the shape of a colourful butterfly. She begins to read. At first these pages seem unconnected thoughts of a person upset and unhappy with life. After the autopsy and the questioning of family members living in the same apartment as well as investigating the entourage of the deceased, it all seems cleared. But after a re-reading, the pages could also be interpreted as an involuntary spiritual testament which opens new doors to the investigation. Was it truly a natural death?

Murder in Court
Series: «Histoires dangereuses»
© 2007

Algard’s story is not only the searching for a murderer, who expresses anger by killing in a Roman Court. Inspector Rotunno and the police sergeant Mazzotta will have to wade through many events which apparently have nothing to do with this death. The vicissitudes of those working in the Courthouse, with their petty jealousies, difficult family relationships, betrayals, resentments, sex and drugs, indicates at a glance in which environment the murderer must be found… The reader should not judge the characters too harshly. Working in the courts of justice does not make normal persons saints or special. It is because of this that Algard has called each by name – with some rare exceptions – in order to make each as human as each of us. A classic habit of Algard to force us to see all of it as it is, instead of hoping for something that one wishes it to be.

The great deception
Series: «Histoires dangereuses»
© 2010

Who has been cheated, swindled, deceived? And why? What’s the motive for the Author to speak of the “Great Deception”? We don’t want to be too precise now because the subject matter is very shocking and it isn’t fair to reveal everything. The reader must remain awake while reading this story. It must be pointed out that, despite the cruelty and inhumanity behind actual occurrences, which makes one share the sufferings of the Jewish victims during World War and condemn the inhumane deeds done. The Author, as a writer of police detective stories and similar, forced himself to take a middle-of-the-road approach. Thus, he has written about the happenings in the form of historical fiction but, as mentioned, it was not always an easy task. As it usually does, at the end of the day, all is forgotten. Let’s hope you don’t forget this story.

Boulot: what comes 'round, goes 'round
Series: «Le monde de Boulot»
© 2004

Boulot, as he is known in France after becoming one of the many homeless in Rome, seems a strange character. It is only the universe in which he lives with others like him, which is different. Not only because they have so many life experiences but for the rules that govern them. That are these better than ours because these are more simple and comprehensible? Especially when they have to face the world of crime? Let the reader be the judge. At times funny or sarcastic but also profound enough to force us to a moment of reflection, Boulot is definitely not a common character nor are his companions in life. Even if, in the past, he was one of us. But only in the past.

The flying home
Series: «Histoires»
© 2011 (Filipino short stories)

This is a book full of stories which may have never happened or could have happened. Only there amongst the villages in the northern Philippines, where men and women live in close contact with Nature, sharing the values of their pasts in order to survive the harshness of daily life. They live in freedom: free from our so-called civilized world, the big and overcrowded cities, cement, smog, supermarkets... Their imagination still accepts events which to a civilized person would appear and seem irrational. Fortunate those who can still cling to the knowledge gained from the past, handeddown traditions, and true family values. For they have an answer to anything and everything which happens, something we have lost. So many of us have lost a sense of life and living with Mother Nature, no longer finding the time to reason properly but to reason according to the others. They have lost hold of a great gift: imagination.

Molinari: a questionable death
Series: «Histoires»
© 2011

When Inspector Roland Molinari began his assignment at the Police department located in Lugano, he did not expect that right from the start of his investigative duties, certainly not boring even during his time in Lausanne, he would be challenged with so many eye-openers. Used to a certain type of criminal way of thinking, during his first case he realized that the lives of some of the inhabitants of villages along the shores of this lake were not always free of mysteries, mysteries not observable in the suggestive postcards tourists tend to buy. The authorities did not appreciate the finding of the body of Salvatore Gangemi in Melide due to his connections to the Italian ‘ndrangheta which turned a simple case into an investigation with complications. The apparently unrelated deaths of the journalist, Paolino Botta, and Alfredo, owner of the Ristorante Corallo, brought to light a multifaceted criminal scheme motivated by sheer greed, family connections, and unrestrained sex. Molinari’s intuition and independent actions, often in disagreement with his superior’s ideas, made it possible to uncover the truth, although at times he did not pay enough attention to Valentina, the new love of his life.

Molinari: the Morcote mistery
Series: «Histoires»
© 2012

Inspector Roland Molinari, recently arrived in Lugano from the criminal police of Lausanne, having solved the complexities of the Affaire Summarughi as the journalist Alessio Meloni of the newspapers Giornale del Popolo called it, has another case to solve which slowly but surely becomes more and more complicated, an enigma to solve. It seems to him that ever since he’s arrived in town, he is confronted with intricate murders. After having solved the first case in a few hours – as atrocious as it was, as his assistant sergeant Michele Aliprandi called it – he is confronted day by day with diabolic and unusual assassins. Trying but not always succeeding to keep a hold on his relationship with Valentina, sister of Alan Pedrina, a seasoned criminologist and some time adviser. This time too Molinari arrives at the solution, having expended a great deal of effort, nearly losing his life, which in the end the astonished locals name “Morcote: The Mystery”.
